FORM: INSIDE AND OUT: A Workshop Series with Nancy Goodstein Sunday, September 13, 20, 27 or October 4, 2009 12:00-3:00pm (Workshops may be taken individually or as a series.) (Please email or call (818) 265-9833 with your date preferences) TEACHERS: Earn 3 continuing education units per workshop toward your Yoga Alliance renewal. When you understand how a pose works, and you feel and develop it within yourselfwithout attachment, the energy starts to flow freely, the pose blossoms and aspects of you bodythat have been shut, sometimes for your whole life, open. Workshops will be limited to a small number of students, so please register early. WEEK ONE: Sun Salutes, Vinyasa and Standing Poses Practitioners go on for years not understanding what they are supposed to be doing in these poses, either physically or energetically and yet they are done in almost every class. Sometimes it is just impossible for a teacher in a group class to attend to every individual. That is what we will do here. With very clear skills, the practice becomes safer, more effective, and more fun. WEEK TWO: Standing on Solid Ground - Standing Balance Poses and Sitting Poses. Note: Weeks one and two may be taken individually but will be beneficial together. WEEK THREE: Inversions - Backbends, Handstand, Shoulderstand, Headstand. Yes, you can and should do these poses, without pain and without fear. Note: Week Three can be taken on its own but would benefit from one of the first two. WEEK FOUR: Advanced Poses - Arm-balances, Jump-throughs, Leg Behind Head Variations. Note: Prerequisite of one prior workshop, to give us a common language on which to base these poses. In these workshops each person will be worked with individually and appropriately to understand their particular tendencies. Restorative Yoga is mostly done on the floor using props such as bolsters, blankets, blocks and straps to support the poses. Gravity and the breath gently open the body from the inside, promoting healing and meditative bliss. Restoratives can be a vital complement to any yoga practice, especially in times of stress. Whether you’re a long-time practitioner, brand-new to yoga, have health issues or are a yoga teacher, this workshop will give you tools to slow down and go deeper by returning to yourself. BANDHA: ESSENTIAL INGREDIENT OF YOGA PRACTICE with Paul Cabanis Sunday, August 9, 2009, 1:00-4:00pm *TEACHERS: Earn 3 continuing education units toward your Yoga Alliance renewal. Patañjali states that after physical conditions have been stabilized, disturbing pains removed, effort transcended and dualities overcome by the process of asana (position), emotional stability or the further practices of Pranayama (control of the life-force) is attained. For this practice, it is essential to apply bandha (closing) to prevent the dissipation of energy and to direct it through the right channels, into the right areas without causing damage elsewhere. Prana can turn lethal when misdirected and the improper performance of bandha will carry numerous adverse effects in its wake. Bandha can only be learned through asana and pranayama is not possible without it. This is practical confirmation of Patañjali's postulation of a distinct progression from asana to pranayama. In this class we will explore the three main bandhas through asana and apply them to pranayama.
