Sometimes practice itself is beautiful and inspirational and other times we need some outside juice to get us to feel a spark that excites and jump starts our time on and off the mat. While we can get that experience from class and community, there are times when we may be on the road, away from our favorite studio or teacher or just in need of something new. Los Angeles-based Yoga teacher Sara Ivanhoe offers this in her newest practice DVD, Yoga on the Edge.

Ivanhoe is no stranger to appearing in front of the camera (where she is also featured includes Yoga for Dummies, Crunch Yoga, Russell Simmons’ Yoga Live and on VH1’s Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew). In her first self-produced offering, Yoga on the Edge, there is a spontaneous, fresh and organic quality to the practice. We see her practicing oceanside, in the sand and on the beach in the Bahamas where the rhythmic sea provides a devotional, living backdrop. Her lyrical movements in the practices almost mirror the ocean’s waves, reminding us that we are water and as we practice, we move and flow and this awakens us body, mind and spirit.

There are three practices found on Yoga on the Edge, of varying lengths and intensities, appropriate for different moods and times of day and filmed with the sky naturally painting the themes providing atmosphere. “Sunrise” offers the longest of the three sequences with a challenging practice to awaken and enliven. “High Noon” provides a lovely midday break to refocus and re-center and could even be a lunchtime practice, clocking in at thirty-eight minutes. In “Sunset,” Ivanhoe soulfully leads the viewer/practitioner through an end of the day wind-down in just under half an hour. To add to the soundtrack of voice and breath, Baird Hershey and Prana with Krishna Das provide the bhav, the devotional mood that comes forth in every movement and every moment. yoganation.com, saraivanhoe.com.
